What is the best camouflage? Wow, that question comes up almost as much as what is the best hunting rifle.
Think back a moment to the days when hunters orange was not required. Then for safety reasons laws were passed requiring hunters to wear so many square inches of orange. The deer weren’t spooked by the orange in the woods nearly as much as by the complaints that could be heard about it by the hunters. We realized that the color had nothing to do with concealment. You see, deer can’t distinct between colors. But what is important is breaking your outline.
So which is better, Mossy Oak, Real Tree, that new digital print pattern? Well if you paid attention to that last paragraph you would understand that it doesn’t matter. They all do the same thing.
Now I know you are waiting for that list of my preferred cammo choices. I don’t have one. I have them all and they all do what they are designed to do. However, there are some very important features that you must keep in mind when buying camouflage and that is safety and comfort.
So lets talk about comfort. I live and hunt in Oklahoma. I still occasionally hunt in Texas and also back home in Wisconsin. Those are some extreme changes in weather. I ned to be able to stay comfortable regardless of the weather I hunt in. This can get expensive unless I have the proper clothing that can be used in different regions. Under Armour has a good line of camouflage that works in all weather. Not only do they carry the tops and bottoms that people are familiar with when they think Under Armour, but they also have a great line of outer wear as well.
By the way, for those of you who still think that Real Tree is better than Mossy Oak or Digital Print or the other way around, Under Armour carries all three patterns.
Layers are another important thing to remember when it comes to comfort. Especially early in the season. The temperature can change 30 or more degrees up and down from dawn to dusk while you are out in the field. It is important to be able to change with the temperatures. This will not only keep you from being too cold to shoot in the morning hours, but will also prevent you from turning into an odor machine from sweating so much in the afternoon. Try to stay away from the coveralls unless it is extremely cold. These are far too difficult to remove and carry over your should as you move around.
So this year when you are sitting around at the deer camp and you guys are tired of arguing over the best hunting rifle and the talk turns to the best camouflage pattern, just remember, there is none.
No, I’m still not going to discuss the best ammunition for deer hunting.
