When most people think of the term Big Game Hunting, they think about Elk hunting, Bear hunting, Caribou hunting, Antelope hunting and other types of big game hunting. They also think about places like Colorado, Alaska, Wyoming, and even far away land like Africa. However nobody really thinks about Oklahoma as being a place for big game hunting.
Although the Whitetail Deer is by definition big game, nobody really thinks of it that way. The term game hunting or just deer hunting is normally used. Oklahoma has a large number of Whitetails and is one of the best states to hunt. The game hunting season for Whitetail here is longer than most states and they have special doe days on top of that just to control the deer population.
Besides Whitetail Deer, Oklahoma also has a nice population of Mule Deer in the western part of the state. head out west and you are sure to see many Mulies.
Elk are also making a comeback here in Oklahoma, but currently you are only allowed to hunt these on private lands. Licensing for Elk is actually cheaper than in most states with a license fee of of only $51.00.
So, the next time you are thinking about doing some Big Game hunting, don’t leave out Oklahoma as an option.
