There are few big game animals that you can hunt in Oklahoma that can get your blood pumping like wild boar. The thought of that 300 plus pound boar with razor tusks that can take the offensive just as quickly as a defensive position keeps you on your toes when you are hunting them.
The population of wild boar, or feral hogs is growing in the state and so is the sport of hunting them.
It is still unknown what the population of these wild hogs are in the state, but it is known that they currently populate at least 77 counties in the state of Oklahoma. Since these hogs can start reproducing at the age of 7 - 8 months, and they can produce 1000 plus young during a 5 year period you can see why the population is growing to unbelieveable numbers.
Although this is a major problem for the farmers and ranchers of this state, it makes for a great experience for those of us who love to hunt.
The state of Oklahoma has two kinds of wild hogs currently populating the wild. There are the normal feral hogs that you can find in most states, and then we also have wild Russian Boars that were brought over and released in 1890. Now if you are just hunting for the meat, it doesn’t really matter what you take. However, if you are also looking for a wall hanger, a Russian looks great.
Hunting for boar in the state of Oklahoma is really a simple matter since they are considered a nuisance. All you need is a basic hunting license. During deer season you can take ferals with whatever weapon that can be used for deer during that season. Or, they can be taken with whatever means any time of the year on private land. Since the farmers and ranchers don’t want them on their property due to the damage they create it is very easy to find a place to hunt them.
I took my first boar a few years back. Since it was my first, I was more into trying to find one that I could hang on the wall. So, I shot the Russian pictured below. He weighed in at just a little over 300 lbs. On the same area of land I also saw a black feral hog that had to have weighed in at well over 500 lbs. Just imagine an angry 500 lb wild boar coming after you. Now if that doesn’t get you excited you may need to set up an appointment with your doctor….or mortician. After my first taste of the meat I have made it a part of my annual hunting routine to go after at least one for the freezer.
If you haven’t yet, give wild boar hunting a try. You don’t have to live in Oklahoma. There are wild pigs that can be found in 39 different states with an estimated population of well over 4,000,000 as of 2006. Give it a try and I’m sure you’ll get hooked.
My Russian

Great idea.
I think I will check into hunting feral hogs in the great state of Tennessee. Seems our rules are roughly the same as yours.
