I talked previously about the importance of having a good topographical map when hunting in new and large areas. However, there are times when you will need something more advanced than just a map. During times like this a GPS is the way to go.
A few years ago, I was scouting a new area I the south eastern part of the state. This was a large area that I don’t often visit. I was driving the many backwood roads when suddenly a large flock of turkeys ran out in front of me. The first thing I did was pull out my GPS and mark that spot. I labeled it ‘Turkey’. I didn’t hunt that area that fall, but the following spring I decided to go back to that area to do some turkey hunting since I knew that there were some around.
Once I got there it was a very simple matter to pull out my GPS and find the very spot that I had seen that flock some months before. I do believe that finding my spot very quickly paid a major part in being able to get my bird that morning because I wasn’t driving all over the place trying to find the right spot to hunt.
Buying a GPS can sometimes be a chore. There are so many out there at so many different prices. I have tried a few of them and have determined that the best on on the market is made by Garmin. You can never go wrong with anything made by Garmin.
The GPS that I am currently using is both affordable and reliable. It even has a a hunting and fishing calculator that provides optimal times of day to plan your excursions. While most GPS’s will run you 200-400 dollars, this one one only cost me about $110.00.
If you are in the market for a good GPS, Check the Garmin eTrex Camo handheld GPS out at Overtons Outlet.

Very interesting post. A little bit confusing, but still ok.
