Well archery season is in full swing and muzzle loading season just ended yesterday. I haven’t been out with my bow yet this year. I prefer to wait until it gets colder. I did however get a doe last week with my black powder. This made me think of a story I want to share about cover scents.
It’s long past time to starting thinking about descenting your cammo, but I would like to talk about something I learned a while back about cover scents. I think I’ve tried them all at one time or another. I always have my dirt wafers that I keep in my scent bags with my cammo but I also use another cover scent when I’m in the field. I used to use fox urine until I had a conversation with a hunting buddy of mine who also traps.
He told me that the fox is a natural predator of fawns so it scares most deer away. I thought he was nuts because it is the number one cover scent being sold out there. He told me to try using skunk urine instead. After once having a bad experience with a skunk I wasn’t really excited about it, but I decided to try it.
Now this was during black powder season. I was set up buy a tree on one of those swivel top buckets watching a hill that I knew a big buck traveled on. Suddenly I had this weird feeling that something was behind me so I very slowly turned my head to look behind me. There was a doe with her neck stretched out trying to sniff me. She didn’t know what I was. I have never experienced anything like this in my entire life so I wasn’t sure what to do. I could try to turn and shoot her, but I knew That wouldn’t work, and I knew that she’d eventually figure me out.
I decide to jump up fast and turn mu gun on her. She jumped and ran halfway up the hill into the clearing, still unsure what I was. So, I raised my gun and got off a perfect shot.
I have used skunk urine since.
