As most of you know, I am a big advocate of getting your children into the world of outdoors sports at an early age. I have written many articles and have posted on many forums on this subject including this post here.
I have talked about my youngest and how he is about ready for his first real fishing trip. Of course to yo and me it’s not really much of a trip since we are just going to a small lake in the Tulsa area, but to him it’s gong to be an adventure. Since the last time I brought it up he has been talking about it.
Although I have written on the subject several times, I still get asked what is the best age to start. Again I will say that it all depends on the child. However, I found something today that I think will help generate an interest in the sport at an earlier age.
I was visiting the website for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service this morning and found a link to a fishing coloring book. This is a coloring book that you can print out as many times as you want. It is in a PDF format, so you will need a reader on your pc. The link is located here.
What’s really cool about this coloring book is it shows scenes that you may see while fishing. This allows them to start recognizing different wildlife at an early age. What I did was print out the different pages individually and give them to him one at a time. This keeps the interest up.
This coloring book is great for starting conversations about fishing and the importance of taking care of the areas that we fish in. Yesterday he colored in a picture of a salmon that he said he was going to catch when we go fishing. This of course gave me a great opportunity to talk about salmon and why they aren’t found here in Oklahoma lakes. So then he colored a bass. Ok, I guess he’s going to catch a nice bass on his first trip.
So even if your child may be too young to hold a rod and bring in a fish on his own, you can still get him involved at an early age. If you have children I recommend that you print out a copy of this free coloring book.
