I have lived in other states before. I’m originally from Wisconsin, but I’ve also lived in Virginia, Texas, and Louisiana. Every time I have moved in the past I wondered what that would do to my favorite pastime. What would the hunting be like? Are there plenty of paces to hunt? How about fishing? Will there be accessible lakes? I know I won’t have the hunting experiences that I did when I was younger living in WI. I also know that I can’t just jump in my truck and go get a bunch of blues like I did in VA. I also know I’ll probably never catch another 75 lb catfish like I did in LA.
Well, moving to OK wasn’t any different. However, I did learn to love it here though. No I haven’t seen a monster buck since I’ve been here. I have however seen some pretty big cats so I may be wrong about my catfish prediction.
There are other things here that I didn’t find in the other states that I lived in though. For instance I shot a 300lb russian boar since I’ve been here. Now that was exciting. The deer may not be as big as I’m used to back home, but 2 years ago I filled my tags for bow, black powder, and gun. I didn’t bother going on the special doe days that year because I figured 6 deer were gave me enough venison to last the year. I know what you are saying “You can never have enough venison”. I met Ted Nugent once at an outdoors show and he’d probably knock me sill for saying that. But I was satisfied with my harvesting for that year.
As far as fishing in Oklahoma? Well I never heard of a paddlefish until I moved here. Now when the short season opens I’m out snagging for them every chance I get. I also took up fly fishing while I was here. Now sure Oklahoma is not known for being much of a fly fishing state, but there really is no greater satisfaction than catching a fish on a very light line with a fly that you’ve made yourself.
That’s pretty much what this blog is going to be about. I’ll share some of my stories and secrets of success that are not only work here in Oklahoma, but also things that have worked in other states as well.
