I took a drive to Keystone lake yesterday to check on the fishing conditions out there. When I drove down below the dam I saw a crowd across the river from the bald eagle nesting area so I thought I’d stop and see how many had returned this season.
During the few minutes that I stopped, I saw 6 eagles soaring above the trees. I’m not sure what the number is in that area this year, but I was pretty impressed. There is nothing more beautiful than a bald eagle floating in the air.
Oklahoma is one of just 10 states where you can see the American Bald Eagle during the winter. Them gather from all of the northern states when the weather gets cold. Oklahoma is visited by over 1000 of the beautiful birds every year.
I you are interested in seeing them, visit http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/eagletours2.htm and see where they are and when the best times are to view them. The area that I was at yesterday was the Sand Springs location. The Tulsa Audubon Society will be there on January 5th and January 13th between 8 AM and 10 AM. They will have spotting scopes set up that you can use to view the eagles. I you aren’t familiar with the area, just go below the keystone dam and follow the signs for eagle viewing. It’s a great way to spend some family time.
Don’t forget to take you rods with you. Walleye and Stripers are hitting right now just below the dam. I caught a couple walleye on some grubs, but I hear they are doing really good on large shiners.

it is still amazing to occassionally see them here in Mississippi and people watch for them nesting in the lake bottoms.
