Well we are one week away from July. The Crappie have finished their run and fishing as a whole is starting to slow down a little in the southern states. Soon we will be in triple digit temperatures. For most hunters, this is a time of pure boredom, but is doesn’t have to be that way.
So, what can be done during these summer months?
Well, if you’ve read my post on scouting, you know that this is a good time to go out and see what you may expect during the upcoming season.
It’s also a great time to work on some of your neglected equipment. Inspect your camouflage and see what needs to be replace. Put a good coat of bee’s wax or pine sap on those leather boots to get them water proofed. Put some silicone spray on your tents to water proof them as well. Get your sleeping bags cleaned. (you know you’ve been putting that off for years now)
This is also a great time to sharpen up on your shooting skills. Go spend some time at the range shooting trap or skeet. Try out some new loads for your muzzle loader. You may find something that works better than last years load. You may also want to try out some new loads for your rifle as well. Visiting the range during the off-season is also a great way to meet other hunters and learn some new tips.
Are you forced to hunt on public land because you haven’t found any good private land to hunt on? Right now is the best time to start meeting those ranchers and farmers who live on some prime hunting land. Take a drive out in the country and keep your eyes open. Look for someone who may need some help and offer your services. You’ll be surprised how far this will go versus showing up on their door step the day before the season opens.
Don’t wait until the fall comes around until you start thinking about what you could have done to make this next season better. Get out there and take care of it right now while you have the time. You’ll find that it’s fun, and before you know it you’ll be out there filling up your freezer again.
Happy Hunting!

Good stuff! I love taking this time to sharpen my shooting skills - day in and day out…it’s good practice, plus it’s just plain fun!
