You heard about that great place to hunt. It’s 500,000 acres of prime hunting land. You know that there are areas in there that have some really nice bucks. But the question is.. How do we find the best place to hunt?


Three Rivers WMA in Oklahoma is 450,000 acres of land that has some of the best hunting in the state. You can spend your whole season there without bumping into another hunter.


When I first heard about this place I just knew that I had to go there. However, hunting in a place like this takes planning. This is not a day trip into your local hunting grounds. You will need to pack enough supplies and equipment to last days.


On a trip like this, probably the most important thing you can take with you is navigational equipment. I of course took my GPS, but that is not really enough when you are looking for that perfect spot. You will need equipment to help you find the right terrain. I’d say probably the most important thing you can take with you to help you get where the deer are is a topographic map. With this map you can easily see the layout of the land. You can see the valleys and ridges. You will be able to set a game plan for success in the field. My first trip down there I got a nice 8 pointer without any pre-scouting and I accredit it all to the planning I did using this map. I had my figured out long before I even got there by studying the lay of the land.


Now there are two ways that you can get topo maps. One is you can go to your local sporting goods store and pay up to $30.00 for one, Or you can go online and get some for free. The best source that I have found for getting free topographic maps is at a site called trails.com.
Another item that you will need is a good compass. I know you are still thinking GPS. However, that GPS still can’t help you find that monster buck. You will need a good compass to go along with that map.


Now the next step of course is to study the map. Plan your strategy then go in and get your trophy.
