The number one topic at every deer camp is the best rifle to use while hunting deer.
So, what is the best deer rifle? That question has as many answers as there are deer hunters. So, I have compiled a lits of what I feel is the top deer hunting rifles out there.
When it comes to finding the perfect rifle to use while deer hunting, most hunters look at two things price, and durability. The following list is what I feel is the best deer hunting rifles to use in not only this area, but in most wooded hunting areas similar to north eastern Oklahoma.
1. H&R Ultra Hunter: Most people prefer a bolt action rifle. But seriously, how often do you get a chance to take a second shot that would be considered a safe shot? This is by far my favorite deer rifle. I have the model SB2-806 which shoots a 25-06 REM. round. This is by far the best rifle for hunting in north eastern Oklahoma, or anywhere you have shots a 200 yard or less.
2. Weatherby Vanguard: This is for all of you bolt lovers out there. I used to have one of these and loved it. Is is all Weatherby, but at a cheaper price. The model I had shot a .270 WIN which was a little more gun than I needed for this part of the country. I ended up trading it out to someone in exchange for leasing his land to hunt on. I will definately be getting another one of these by next fall because I plan to do some mule deer hunting in the western part of the state.
3. Savage Model 110: This is probably one of the best bolt action rifles that you can gt for your money. Though not one of the most attractive rifles ever designed, the Savage 110 has a well-deserved reputation for strength and accuracy. One of the reasons for its fine accuracy is the reason many call it ugly - the barrel locknut. Features include adjustable trigger, detachable or non-detachable box magazine (varies by model), and a three-position thumb safety. Accutrigger available on some models.
4. Winchester Model 70: Several versions of the M70 have existed: pre-64, post-64, and Classic. Winchester redesigned it in 1964, and in the 1990s introduced a version similar to the pre-64, called Classic. Many versions & grades available. Features include a very simple adjustable trigger, detachable or non-detachable box magazine with or without hinged floorplate (depending on model), and three-position safety on bolt. (Manufacture discontinued in 2006.)
5. Remington Model 700: The Remington Model 700 is an enduring rifle, and possibly the most popular American bolt-action rifle of all time. This rifle is available in many variations and grades. Features include adjustable trigger, detachable or non-detachable box magazine with or without hinged floorplate (depending on the model), and a side-mounted thumb safety.
Well, there’s my list. I’m sure many will disagree somewhat. Everybody has there own favorite and you will never talk them out of it. But give one of these a try. I’m sure that you will be more than pleased with the results.
Now, the next question is which round is best? uh uh, I’m not touching that one.

I have owned a Remington 700 series 30-06 and found it to be a good gun. This year I purchased a Ruger M-77 Hawkeye in .308. This is a nail driver at 100 yards and fits my hands well (I never shot the gun further then this as there aren’t any ranges near me that go past this mark). The trigger is preset at about 3.5-4 pounds I am not sure that it is adjustable though. This poundage is perfect for me.The gun comes with a mouser (sp?) action which cycles bullets flawlessly. I had a heck of a time with loading my Remington. I couldn’t ever fill the magazine fully and the bullet cycling was a miserable event.
Just another to consider on your list.
